With a Master's Degree in Nutrition I know what causes normal
weight. But in my 25 year role as a Physician I could do little
to help my patients. Sure, I could hand them a diet or refer them
to a dietician. I could counsel them on cutting down the sweets,
fats, and portion sizes. I nagged about exercise. But over the
years my patients just got larger.
Why? Because diets don't work!
They don't work for obvious reasons:
Diets are based on restriction. With our conscious will-power
we order ourselves to "Eat this and don't eat that!"'
But the sub-conscious mind reacts and rebels. It does not like
being told what to do, just like a resistant small child. It has
its own agenda -- it wants to enjoy the tastes, to comfort or reward
itself, or to fit in with group. Since the sub-conscious mind is
really in charge, any plan that doesn't take care of these needs
is doomed to failure!
Diets are usually based on "less ". Less pleasure, less
choice, and less quantity. Who among us wants 'less' in life?
Diets make us feel bad about ourselves. Diets label foods "good" and "bad" and
we label ourselves "good" and "bad" when we
succeed or fail. Our self-esteem rises or falls based on the scale.
Rather than viewing ourselves with understanding and compassion
when we give into the occasional temptation, we feel ashamed. And
shame leads to overeating.
